JAPANESE SILK

All of our silk is from Japan and was hand selected.   Some was acquired in rolls (in the standard Japanese width of 14 inches and up to 12 yards in length) which is just enough to make one kimono but never cut into a kimono.    Other pieces come from kimono we took apart,  a process that takes up to 2.5 hours..   These pieces were ironed and all the little threads were removed by tweezers, another very time consuming and process.    Those pieces of the standard 14 inch width were either rolled or cut up futher to join the narrow pieces that end up in our exclusive SILK PACKS.

Because of the limited quantity of each pattern, it is impossible to send swatches of the hundreds of rolls of silk in our inventory.    For a close-up look at our textiles, please see us at  one of the other shows where we have a booth.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NOW A SECOND PAGE OF SILK YARDAGE WHICH CAN BE ACCESSED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.   Both this page and the next page have thumbnails - if you click on the picture, you will see a larger image.

Silk20

The following silk yardage is a tiny sampling of some of the Japanese silks that we offer.  Please note that some of the fabric is in pieces.  This means that we have taken that material from a kimono.  It is in excellent condition - no stains, holes, tears, rips, etc.  Some of the photos might look a bit blurry.  Some is due to the very cheap camera we are using.  Also, it could be attributed to the particular silk being ikat.  Now silk is ususally woven and then dyed to get the design.  With ikat, the threads are dyed and then woven to make the design.  This results in a wonderful pattern that is more subtle than the usual dying method.

Panel 1:  each panel is 26 inches long.  White silk habati with multicolor images of children dressed in festival costume.   These figures are images of "Gosho" dolls, popular in Japanese history.   This silk has never been processed into a kimono so the panels must be cut from the original roll.  Cost per panel is $20.
