Kasuri (the Japanese word for ikat) is fabric that has been woven from theads that are especially dyed to create the woven pattern displayed on the finished piece. This intricate art requires that the weaver plan in advance exactly where the dyed threads will fall in the weave in order to create a recognizable design. Unfortunately, in today's Japan, only a few elderly weavers of this technique continue their textile artistry. Attempts to imitate this process by mechanical means never been fully achieved. Consequently, it is becoming very difficult to acquire kasuri and a major business that sold kasuri in Berkeley has had to close.

The following yardage is offered from our collection of hand woven kasuri. Please note that some yardage is in pieces. This is due to our carefully taking apart a garment OR the material was cut by the designer but never made into a garment. Unless specified, all are 100% cotton. If you buy the remainder of any item number, you get a discount. All are in 14 inch width unless otherwise specified.
We cut minimum one yard pieces from those item numbers where there is an uncut roll or pieces which are longer. If the pieces are listed by price, we will not cut them smaller.
