Japanese weddings are special and can be extremely expensive. Last figure we saw for an average wedding is about $50,000. One reason is that the bride wears three different wedding garments during the actual ceremony (usually attended by immediate family only) and the subsequent banquet. The garments are: uchikake or Japanese wedding kimono (see following photos of those we offer for sale), a western wedding dress and what would be perfectly acceptable as a cocktail or prom dress. All of the following uchikake have been hand selected from thousands we have viewed.
On our spring 2003 tour to Japan, we discovered that used wedding kimono were becoming very scarce. Those which were available ranged from awful (stained, nylon, etc) at high prices to good ones that were prohibitively expensive. One dealer from whom we purchased many kimono in the past had only 5 when he normally had over 40! Of these, all were nylon except one white one that was badly stained. We were shocked! He said Japanese brides now wear only a western style wedding dress and do not use the traditional uchikake (Japanese wedding kimono). So, being able to get one of these is going to get very difficult as time passes. From our collection, we offer the following:
